Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday lauded Goa Police's narco-policing on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking saying in the last two years narcotic drugs worth nearly Rs 15 crore were seized and about 450 persons were arrested and 400 cases booked.
“Continuous action by Goa Police has broken the back of drug trafficking in the state," Sawant claimed.
Sawant asserted that his government is committed to zero tolerance to illegal drugs.
Meanwhile, the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights convened a stakeholder meeting for dialogue on the Joint Action Plan on Prevention of Substance Abuse among children on the eve of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The Collectors and SPs of North and South Goa, Superintendent of Police, Narcotics Control Bureau, Goa Zone, District Excise Officer, District Education Officer (DEO), Child Welfare Police Officer, District Child Protection Unit, Child Welfare Committees (CWC), District Social Welfare Officers, Chief Medical Officer and District Drugs Control Authority attended the meet.
The meet deliberated on drugs and substance abuse among children and strategic actions and interventions according to Peter F Borges, Chairperson, Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
Some of the key prevention strategies included circular to ensure that there should not be any liquor shop nearby schools and to ensure that an FIR is registered against the person under Section 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 who violates the law.
Creating provision/mechanism for early detection of substance use among children through Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) and having separate or exclusive dedication and rehabilitation facilities for children with drugs and substance use by the Department of Social Welfare was also discussed.
Mapping of children in street situations using drugs and substances and producing before Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for keeping them in a fit facility for counselling, treatment and rehabilitation was another measure deliberated.
