Raising concern over large number of cases of frauds in land ownership and sale, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said the Special Investigative Team (SIT) will conduct a thorough probe into some 60 such deals over the last decade and more.
"At least 60-70 cases have come to light, spread across all talukas but majority are in coastal talukas of Tiswadi, Bardez and Salcete”, Sawant said, referring to his government's decision to set up the SIT under the Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch).
Sawant termed it a big land scam and promised that the SIT will go into each case to identify and nab the culprits at the earliest.
The SIT has been formed collaboratively among the departments of revenue, registration and archaeology and will function under the SP Crime, he said.
Victims of land-related frauds can also file complaints providing all documentation directly with the SIT at the Crime Branch, the chief Minister who also holds the Home portfolio said.
He also said that land belonging to NRIs and even government land had been fraudulently transferred to others.
