MARGAO
Former Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Panaji, DySP Mohan Naik on Wednesday submitted before the South Goa Sessions Court in the Panaji Police station attack case that the police had resorted to the lathi charge to control the violent mob.
In his deposition before Sessions Judge, Irshad Agha, the former Panaji DySP said the police also lathi charged the mob since there was every possibility of the mob taking custody of the two persons, arrested by the police.
While submitting that the police ordered the lathi charge to disperse the mob, DySP Mohan further submitted that the mob assembled at the police station and pelted stones at the police station and the police personnel. He said the police burst tear gas shells in order to disburse the mob and the situation was brought under control after firing in the air by the police.
Saying that then MLA Atanasio Monseratte had visited the Panaji police station to demand the release of the two accused persons arrested in a crime, DySP Mohan said the MLA was told to move the court for bail since the offence in which the duo were arrested were non-bailable.
He further claimed that the MLA also made a speech while demanding suspension of Panaji PI Sudesh Naik. Deposition of the former DySP will continue at the next hearing scheduled on February 2.
