SANGUEM
The declaration of a 15-day statewide curfew in the State from Sunday led to a sudden rush at general stores and vegetable vendors in the Sanguem town area, as people have been stocking up on essential items for the next two weeks.
The rush at grocery stores was noticed till afternoon, as many people from remote areas of Sanguem taluka also rushed to the town area to buy grocery items.
While the government reassured that grocery shops would remain open in the morning during the curfew, people continued panic buying amid fears that grocery stores could run out of supplies in the next few days.
Moreover, many were also afraid that they could be stopped by police if they were to venture out during the curfew
There was also a rush at the lone gas agency in Sanguem on Saturday morning as a large number of people queued up to buy domestic gas cylinders. The crowd, however, reduced by about 11 am after the LPG dealer informed customers that the agency would be open on all days during the curfew as LPG cylinders are considered an essential commodity.
Incidentally, the villages of Kurdi-Wadem, Bhati and Netravali had already been in lockdown mode, before the 15-day statewide curfew announced by the State government.
