PORVORIM
Residents of Housing Board Colony, Torda, Pundalik Nagar and nearby areas have been facing acute water shortage ever since the PWD has started supplying them with water from the Porvorim treatment plant.
Speaking to The Goan, locals said these areas would receive the supply in the morning when water, which was received from the Assonora treatment plant, was released to them.
However, when PWD started treating water at Porvorim and releasing it to Torda, Pundalik Nagar and Housing Board Colony, supply became regularly irregular, while timings for the release were also changed.
The aggrieved residents claimed that they have not received water for the last 2-3 days.
“The summer has just begun and if this is the state of water supply in March, then what will be the position in April and May? The PWD should stop the release of water from the Porvorim treatment plant and resume water supply from Assonora at old timings,” said a resident.
“The new timings for the release of water in the afternoon is not convenient to residents as most of them are out of their homes.”
When contacted, sources at PWD stated that they treat around 8 MLD of water at the Porvorim treatment plant and supply it to Torda, Pundalik Nagar and Housing Board colony only.
“Water to Torda is released early in the morning while water to Housing Board Colony is released in the afternoon and to Pundaliknagar in between this period.”
“The treated water from Assonora is being supplied to Socorro, defence colony, PDA colony, Betim and other areas. When raw water is not received at the Porvorim reservoir from Tillari due to some technical reasons, the PWD is unable to treat the water and supply it to Housing Board Colony, Torda, Pundalik Nagar and nearby areas.”
“This exercise is being conducted on a trial basis, and if we find that the water from Tillari is not received regularly, we will make arrangements to supply treated water from the Assonora treatment plant at old timings to Torda, Pundalik Nagar and Housing Board areas,” said a PWD official.
