Insisting that acts of violence will not be tolerated, Caretaker Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has directed the police to take strict action against culprits involved in the port town clashes.

Sawant visited the Chicalim Sub District Hospital on Saturday morning to inquire about Pradeep Mayekar, father of BJP councillor Prajay Mayekar, who was injured in a clash between two rival groups during the Holi celebration on Friday.

DGP I D Shukla, Vasco BJP MLA Krishna Salkar, ex-MLA Milind Naik and other BJP leaders were also present during CM’s visit to the hospital.

Later speaking to reporters, Sawant said post-poll violence will not be tolerated, and no one would be spared.

“Let this message be clear to all. Some political parties with a culture of violence could not win in Goa, but seem to have left back their flavour. This has never been the tradition in Goa where supporters of losing candidates were beaten up.”

“We will not tolerate such violent culture. The father of a councillor was beaten up and he has been injured on his head and back. His house has been damaged by the pelting of stones and a BJP youth president was also beaten up. Tomorrow, they can do anything to anyone," said Sawant.

The chief minister said a police team led by the DGP is investigating the incident and everyone involved is identified in the video shot.

“All of them will be arrested, and some have been found, while some are absconding. We will not spare anyone. To bring things under control, the DGP has personally arrived, and he will coordinate and monitor the situation.”

Later in a tweet, the chief minister stated: “Pradeep Mayekar, father of our karyakarta from Mormugao, has been physically assaulted by Congress supporters after election results. We will not tolerate such acts of violence. I have asked the police to take strict action against the culprits.”
