The government has come up with an innovative way to fight corruption in its departments. The Information Technology, Electronics & Communications Department has taken a ‘pledge’ and undertaken ‘sensitization of anti-corruption laws’ to tackle the menace after a high-ranking officer was caught demanding a bribe from a job aspirant.
Replying to an unstarred question, IT Min Rohan Khaunte stated that the department filed an FIR against a Group A Gazetted Officer and the case is under investigation with the Vigilance Department. The reply however did not name the suspended officer.
IT Deputy Director Siddhart Borkar was suspended after the Vigilance Department prima facie found his involvement in demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a candidate. The department had advertised for the position with a monthly salary of Rs 75,000.
To another question by LoP Yuri Alemao about corrective measures the government has taken to ensure that such incidents are not repeated/do not occur again, the department replied, “Anti Corruption Pledge, Sensitisation of Anti Corruption laws.”
As per internal report, the audio clip appeared to be of an interview for the post of Senior Associate (1 post) and Junior Associate (1 post) for a one-year contract term in the Start Up Promotion Cell, which was held on January 30 by the Selection Committee. While none were found suitable for the post, the Committee recommended re-advertising the posts.
“In view of the above interview which is of the DOITEC and taking note of the above incidence, the matter may be referred to the Vigilance department for thorough inquiry and ascertain the veracity and take appropriate action as per the law,” reads the note, following which the officer was suspended till completion of inquiry. The department was also recommended to file a complaint with the Anti Corruption Branch against its officer.
