Political slugfest erupts over Margao Carnival festivities

After adopting the Council resolution last month to pave way for the return of the Margao Carnival float parade back on the old route, the BJP-ruled Margao Municipal Council on Thursday unveiled plans to hold the Carnival parade in a grand manner on February 19.

The Margao float parade will be flagged off by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at the Holy Spirit Church square at 3 pm.

Attired in Carnival costume, indicating the Carnival mood amongst the ruling City Fathers, Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar along with President of the Margao Carnival Committee Camilo Barretto, besides councillors thanked the people of Salcete for wholeheartedly supporting the Council resolution to bring the Margao Carnival float parade back on the Holy Spirit Church-Margao Municipal Square route. The Margao Carnival and Shigmo float parade was being held in Fatorda along the Ravindra Bhavan-Nehru stadium road since it was shifted by the then Council ruled by the Goa Forward.

Addressing the media, Committee president Camilo Barretto said the Holy Spirit Church-Margao Municipal square had been the traditional and natural route of the Carnival float parades over the years before it was shifted to Fatorda five years ago. “After the Council adopted the decision to bring the parade back on the route, the Margao Municipality received thousands of congratulatory messages in support of the decision”, Camilo said, even as he pledged to make the float parade on the old route a success.

Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar said that besides the Carnival float parade in the city on February 19, Carnival programmes will be held at the Margao Municipal square on February 20-21.

Besides, he said the traditional khell-tiatr will be staged in all the 25 wards during the three-day Carnival festivities.

The MMC chairperson said that arrangements for ambulance with doctor, fire brigade, watch towers, besides drinking water facility will be put in place on the day of the Carnival float parade in the city on February 19.
