They were promised 16,000 litres of free water, but many people in Canacona taluka have been outraged to find huge water bills sent to them.
According to sources, over 50 domestic consumers in Agonda alone have received water bills ranging between Rs 10,000 and Rs.25,000, while several consumers have received water bills ranging between Rs 1,000 and 5000.
A domestic consumer in Agonda, who claims his tap hardly provides him water supply, was shocked to receive a water bill for 650 units for the period from September 1, 2021 to March 3, 2022 (184 days). With a Meter Rent of Rs 307 and arrears of Rs 1,964, the resident has received a bill for Rs 18,521.
Another resident, who claims their house has been closed since the last 2 years, received a bill for Rs 13,240, comprising 518 units, meter rent (Rs 290) for the period from September 1, 2021 to February 21, 2022.
In both cases, water consumed has been billed a flat rate of Rs 25 per Unit.
Another household in Agonda received a water bill for Rs 20,000, while yet another resident of Cabo-De-Rama in Khola received a bill for Rs 16,000.
Sources said several people across Canacona taluka have received hefty water bills ranging in thousands of rupees and expressed their inability to pay the huge amount.
Many have now claimed that people have been fooled with the free water supply scheme of 16000 litres a month.
