Religious celebrations at Poriem Bhumika Temple to continue amid tensions

Religious celebrations at Poriem Bhumika Temple to continue amid tensions

PANAJI: Deputy Collector has revoked section 144 imposed in Poriem and decided to open the Bhumika temple to allow devotees cum villagers to

hold two-day religious celebrations starting from today.

This comes after escalating tensions between two groups over ritual rights at the temple.

On Friday night, villagers blocked the Chorla-Sankhlim road in protest over the Sakhleshwar Temple issue, closing the Goa-Belagavi road and diverting traffic via Honda.

The conflict began when one group conducted rituals early Friday morning, sparking protests from the other group. Tensions grew after the Sattari SDM ordered the temple’s closure until December 24. Four individuals were booked by police, provoking further unrest. Some members of the accused group pelted stones, injuring a policeman.

With the closure order lifted, the religious celebrations will proceed, though authorities continue to remain vigilant.
