In a development which could have a major impact on the political scenario in St Cruz constituency, Rudolf Fernandes, son of late former minister, Victoria Fernandes (Mummy), is all set to join the Congress on Sunday.
The move is likely to bolster the Congress in the constituency, which had suffered a major setback after its MLA Tony Fernandes joined the BJP along with nine other Congress MLAs.
It may be recalled that The Goan had reported in February that there were rumours doing the rounds in St Cruz that Rudolf Fernandes was likely to join the Congress party. The Goan had also reported that Rudolf’s son, Kiban, had already been appointed youth president of St Cruz Congress, giving more credence to the rumours.
When contacted, Fernandes confirmed the development while informing that talks in this direction were going on since the time of ZP elections.
“I was in talks with Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and was waiting for the right opportunity to make the move,” Fernandes added and said that he has taken his supporters in confidence before deciding to join the Congress.
He further informed that his main aim is to embolden the Congress party in St Cruz and take it to the height it had achieved when his mother was the legislator for 20 years.
“I will try to bring in the Congress fold many supporters who had left the party after Mummy was denied the Congress ticket,” Fernandes said and stated that he wants to tie up with the different NGOs in the constituency so that a holistic development of the constituency is achieved.
“I am in touch with different NGOs and have extended my support on different issues affecting the constituency as well as the State,” he added.
When pointed out that the Congress party has been used as a stepping stone for political success by many politicians only to be abandoned later, Fernandes said that he is not that kind of a politician.
“Those who have greed for money and power are the ones who leave a party which gave them success. I am not greedy and will remain with the party,” he added.
