In Bardez, the electoral landscape witnessed a captivating drama on voting day, characterised by intriguing shifts in turnout, unexpected surges and a few technical glitches in the voting process.
From the early hours of Tuesday morning, a see-saw battle in the voting pattern unfolded, intriguing political observers and engaging BJP supporters.
The sudden surge in voting post-noon sparked enthusiasm among BJP loyalists, particularly in Bardez. However, beneath the surface, silent undercurrents hinted at a more complex narrative.
The aggressive and vigorous campaign spearheaded by the BJP appeared to reap dividends as voters defied extreme weather conditions to cast their ballots in large numbers. Initially, polling stations witnessed a rush of voters in the morning, but as the day progressed, the turnout dwindled significantly. By 1 pm, several booths were nearly deserted, with only a trickle of voters.
The unexpected pattern prompted surprise even within the BJP ranks, prompting a swift activation of party cadres to mobilise voters. Post 2 pm, a sudden surge in voter turnout was observed across polling stations, continuing until the end of polling.
A reversal of the usual voting trend was noticeable in Mapusa, with longer queues dominated by men during the morning session. Conversely, rural villages saw a robust participation of female voters, signalling a potential shift in voting patterns.
However, the first half of the day witnessed a lack of enthusiasm not only among voters but also among BJP cadres in Mapusa. The usual zeal displayed by party workers in previous elections was notably absent on the ground. Interestingly, voters remained tight-lipped about their preferences, adding to the intrigue surrounding the surge in voting.
Despite a few technical glitches in electronic voting machines (EVMs), the polling process overall proceeded peacefully, albeit with some polling stations experiencing slow voting due to long queues.
The joint opposition's candidate for North Goa, Ramakant Khalap exuded confidence in his campaign, expressing optimism about his chances of victory. "People are embracing the festival of democracy with enthusiasm. Despite the challenges, they have shown their support for my candidacy, reaffirming their commitment before and after casting their votes. I am confident of a resounding victory," Khalap stated after casting his vote in Mapusa.
