Six months and 14 days. That’s the time taken by Porvorim Police to register a case against the alleged accused in the fraudulent property deal. It's only after the intervention of the new DGP ID Shukla, the Porvorim Police was forced to register the case on Dec 15.
The complaint against the alleged four accused was filed at the Porvorim police station on June 1, this year, but the police just refused to register an FIR.
The complainant, A Carvalho, who is related to the victim NRI couple and represents them in the case, made several rounds to the police station to impress senior police officials to register the case.
But instead of registering an FIR and instituting an inquiry, police officials made snide remarks and literally harassed the complainant.
“It was six months of sheer pain and agony. At least two senior police officials shouted at me and passed remarks ridiculing me for persisting with the case. I suffered silently but did not give up,” Carvalho told The Goan.
“My brother-in-law and sister have been working for the last 22 years in Abu Dhabi and they have invested their hard earned savings to buy the properties. They were cheated by these professional fraudsters. How can we remain silent,” the complainant added.
Finally, the NRI couple flew down to Goa in the first week of December and met the new DGP, ID Shukla and explained to him the chronology of events that led them to file the complaint.
It was only on the instructions of the DGP, the police machinery began to roll and a first information report was finally filed on Dec 15.
The entire episode puts a section of the police officers in poor light with suspicion growing whether police is hand in gloves with the accused.
