Canacona MLA and Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar garlanded the Martyr’s Memorial (Hutatma Chowk) at Chaudi-Canacona to mark the Goa Revolution Day early Sunday morning.
Accompanied by Canacona Municipal Council Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar, Speaker Tawadkar garlanded the Hutatma Chowk built in honour of all the Freedom Fighters of Canacona, who had fought and struggled to attain the Liberation of Goa from the 450- years of Portuguese colonialism.
"We had gained the liberation on December 19, 1961, but the foundation for the freedom movement was laid way back on June 18, 1946 to liberate us from the clutches and atrocities of the Portuguese regime. This Hutatma Chowk reminds us of the sacrifices and contributions made by Goa’s and particularly Canconcars in Goa’s pre-liberation struggle’, said Tawadkar. Tawadkar also remembered Terekhol Veer Alfred Alfonso, born in Galgibaga for having fought tirelessly to attain liberation for Goa.
Canacona Dy Collector Ramesh Gaonkar , CMC Dy Chairperson Narcisco Fernandes, councillors Hemantkumar Naikgaunkar, Nitu Dessai, besides a few other prominent citizens were also present amongst a few others on the occasion.
Meanwhile, Canacona Ex-MLA/Ex-Dy. Speaker Isidore Fernandes stating our forefathers who have sowed the seeds of revolution are the actual masters of the liberation we gained later, said, it will be hard to forget the contributions of Canconcars since the revolution day earmarked the movement for liberating Goa from Portuguese forced occupation of Goa.
GFP Environment Cell Chairman Vikas Bhagat informed, ‘I too extended my momentous wishes on this revolution day while we should never forget the courage and sacrifices of those brave individuals who ignited the spark of revolution. May we continue to carry their legacy forward and strive towards a brighter future for Goa’.
