Special cell to guide students on JEE, NEET from next year

PANAJI

Taking note that many aspiring students lack proper information about competitive exams for admissions to professional colleges, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced the setting up of a dedicated JEE-NEET Cell under the Directorate of Technical Education.

Speaking during the career guidance programme, Sawant also expressed concern that nearly 30 per cent of engineering seats in Goa colleges remain vacant while even after 50 per cent reservations for IIT and NIT, there are very few or no takers in the State.

The Chief Minister criticised teachers for failing to provide students with adequate guidance on JEE-NEET examinations and related admission processes. “Recently, I came across a boy who told me he was not aware about the process to appear for NEET. Whose mistake is this? Teachers are not providing guidance to the students on career aspects,” he lamented.

Sawant said that the JEE-NEET cell will guide students on various fronts including applying under the All India Quota, EWS and other categories. “In the last two-three years, we have seen that almost 30 per cent of engineering seats in our colleges are going vacant,” he said.

He also pointed out that despite having 50 per cent of seats in NIT and IIT reserved for Goan students, there are hardly any or no takers. “I don’t see many students making an attempt for IIT,” he said, informing that in Goa there are a total 400 seats for nursing.

Sawant stressed that every student should attempt at least one competitive exam after Class XII to gauge their academic standing and advised early preparation for GPSC and UPSC exams.
