The ST community on Friday invoked diving blessings with a 'Gharane' at a temple in Sanguem and Masses in Churches to seek political reservation for the community in the State.
The core committee members of Mission Political Reservations for Schedule Tribes of Goa along with supporters and wellwishers conducted a 'Gharane', a special prayer meeting, at the Shree Paikdev Temple in Sanguem to pray for the success of the high-level delegation meet with the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda in New Delhi.
Members of the ST community said they had been demanding for their rights over the reservation of seats for the ST community ever since the government notification on Schedule Tribe in 2003.
“Over the years, the community had repeatedly raised the issue of reservation of seats for ST community in the elections, but the government only gave assurances which never got fulfilled,” said Govind Shirodkar, a leader of ST community.
“It is only after consequent failure to put the reservation policy in order that the community finally started the ‘Mission for Political Reservation for Schedule Tribes.”
“The mission has proved successful and it is the same zeal and at the same time when the core leaders are meeting the Union Minister for Tribal Welfare in Delhi that the prayer meeting at various places all over Goa was held,” Shirodkar added.
Another member of the Schedule Tribes, Francisco Carvalho from Uguem, said prayers for the mission to be successful were also offered at Holy Spirit Church in Margao, where the members of the Schedule Tribe community also participated in the Mass.
At other places, community members from the Catholic community attended daily Masses in their respective villages to pray for the success of the high delegation meeting in New Delhi.
