With demands to postpone classes or curtail school hours pouring in from parents and social workers, the Education Department has decided to take up the matter with the government for a decision.
“I have received one representation so far, from Cecille Rodrigues, which has been signed by 46 parents. It will be taken up with the government,” Education Director Shailesh Zingde told The Goan, on being contacted for a comment on the issue.
Rodrigues, accompanied by a delegation met the director on Thursday to submit the representation which she stated has been signed by parents to protect their children’s health.
“The director said that the school has to complete 220 working days in the full academic year. He also said that they are aware of some schools leaving early and the schools can take decisions depending on their situation,” she said.
A delay in the arrival of the monsoon and the scorching heat has prompted several parents, NSUI and social workers like Rodrigues urging to postpone classes or curtail the school timing to half-day.
Meanwhile, the department will soon decide about continuing schools in Canacona till the acute water shortage in the taluka is resolved.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who is also holding the Education portfolio, is likely to hold a meeting with the department and the officials of the Canacona schools.
