Fight between 'lovers' ends in woman's suicide

Had left spouses in Bihar to spend 'quality time'

PANAJI

An ugly drunken fight between two married people  from Patna (Bihar) who were allegedly having an affair took a tragic turn when the woman ended her life, a case that was initially suspected to be murder. Ironically, the couple had left their respective spouses back in their hometown to ‘spend some quality time together’ in rental premises in Calangute.

Police sources told The Goan that the 34-year-old lady identified as Sanjana Kumari, had been working in Goa for a considerable period of time while her male companion Amrender Kumar arrived two days before the incident.

On the fateful night on Wednesday, a heated argument broke out between the two over a trivial matter, which quickly escalated to the point where their neighbour had to intervene. Police sources said that the man, who is married and has two children, subsequently sought to take refuge at their neighbour’s place.

“In a fit of rage, the woman forcefully slammed the door of their rented house and hung herself from the ceiling fan using a saree. When Amrender and their neighbors saw this happening, they rushed to her rescue. She had already hung herself by the time they broke open the door. The witnesses took her to the Primary Health Centre at Candolim from where she was shifted to GMC but doctors declared her “brought dead,” sources revealed.

Upon investigation, the police obtained CCTV footage from the area, which showed Sanjana and Amrender purchasing liquor bottles from a nearby store for themselves. “They had a party where both consumed alcohol. The altercation originated when a discussion about abandoning their marital lives surfaced,” police sources further said.

As per details shared by Superintendent of Police (North) Nidhin Valsan, the Calangute police have recorded statements from the parents of the deceased, who also live in Goa. Sanjana’s father revealed that she was married and her husband resides in their native place. The couple has a 13-year-old daughter together.

It is learnt that she would share part of her monthly earnings with her husband and daughter while Amrender often frequented Goa to allegedly meet her.

“According to eyewitnesses and neighbours, it is believed that Sanjana took her own life by hanging herself using a saree. Eyewitnesses report that the woman locked herself inside the room and hung herself. Her boyfriend,  Amrender Kumar, had to break open the door to gain entry,” the SP said. “Arrangements are made to send the body for post-mortem in the presence of the deceased’s husband,” the officer said.

The deceased’s husband is expected to arrive in the State on Friday subsequent to which a post-mortem will be conducted.
