Congress' Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao on Wednesday urged the State government to rethink its recruitment policy and tweak the rules to make the requirement of 'knowledge of Konkani' more stringent.
Speaking on the demands for grants pertaining to the department of official language, Alemao said the current requirement of 'knowledge of Konkani' for jobs in government and semi-government enterprises is lax and even migrants qualify with their limited knowledge of the official language.
"It is necessary to tweak the rules. Academic knowledge of the language must be stipulated. Some condition that Konkani should be the third language in academics (of the candidate) must be insisted," Alemao said, while pointing out that spoken knowledge of the language should not be made the benchmark.
The Cuncolim MLA said the migrant population easily gain 'knowledge of Konkani' and grab the jobs elbowing out local youth who remain jobless.
Speaking on other demands for grants, Alemao asked the government to pay attention to maintenance and upkeep of several important public monuments. He especially mentioned the Lohia Maidan in Margao and the Azad Maidan in Panaji, which he said were facing neglect.
The Cuncolim MLA also raised several issues pertaining to his constituency especially the strength of the police force at the Cuncolim police station and the need for another one at Chandor taking into account the difficult geographical jurisdiction of the constituency.
