A huge tree came crashing down in the Vasco market area on Sunday morning damaging around 7 to 8 vehicles that were parked along the busy road. Fortunately, there was no loss of life or injuries reported in the incident.
Speaking to The Goan, a girl said that she had just parked her bike and had gone a little away when she heard a loud noise and then she saw the tree come crashing on the road and totally damaging her bike.
A fire officer said that they received a call at around 10.57 am and when they reached the site, the tree had crashed and all the electricity wires had been strewn around.
“There were around 7 to 8 vehicles trapped under the tree and the electricity wires were all around. We then got the Electricity Department to disconnect the power supply and also began our works. We will assess the damage done after the tree is cleared,” said the officer.
Mormugao Municipal Council, City ward councillor Shami Salkar said that it was very important that the tree branches be trimmed.
“There are around 15 weak trees that need to be trimmed immediately. I request the council to put an end to the politics and get the trees trimmed by providing us a tree cutter. We will also engage a private tree cutter to trim the branches of other trees at our own cost using a crane for the safety of the people,” said Salkar.
Meanwhile, former councillor Krishna Daji Salkar said that he had been tired of giving the council several reminders for the last many years and that he had written more than ten letters to the council and given them several reminders regarding the weak trees.
“There is another weak tree in the market and we will have a lot of people visiting the market do purchases for Ganesh Chaturthi. If that tree comes crashing, many shops and properties will be damaged and besides there will be a huge human casualty as well. The council must shun away politics while keeping the security of people at stake. It is better to dissolve the council and get an administrator,” said Daji Salkar.
He said that he will meet the chief officer and demand for a tree cutter so that maximum trees are trimmed before the Ganesh Chaturthi.
“Today we have the Sunday Market and there are a lot of people who arrive here but with Lord Damodar’s blessings, no one was hurt but we can’t take risks anymore. I have even requested the council that I will get a private crane and get this trees trimmed and all I requested was a tree cutter,” added Salkar.
