Truck clears Goa border, but detained by Karnataka excise with Rs 2.3 lakh liquor

CANACONA
While some truckers have found it easy to cross the Goa border, their luck seems to run out when they enter the Karnataka border and come under the watchful eye of Karnataka law enforcement agencies.

In one such case, a truck which passed through the Goa border was stopped at the Karnataka border at Majali-Karwar and excise sleuths seized liquor worth Rs 2.3 lakh in the wee hours of Friday.

According to a Karnataka excise officer, the Kerala-registered truck officially loaded with some iron cargo was intercepted at the Majali check-post at about 2.30 am, after crossing the border check post at Polem-Canacona.

“A Karnataka excise team launched a search of the truck and found 32 bags of liquor consignment, with each bag containing 36 bottles. A total of 1,152 bottles containing 864 litres of Goan liquor and valued at Rs 2,30,400, was seized from the truck.”

“We have taken the truck driver into custody and also seized the truck and liquor consignment,” said Excise Sub-Inspector R N Naik at the Majali check-post.

Other sources informed that the Karnataka excise team had recently seized liquor worth Rs 1.64 lakh from a car travelling from Goa, which had also passed the Polem check-post without difficulty.

Sources told The Goan that Goa's border at Polem appeared porous and provided a relatively easier passage not only for liquor transportation but various other taxable inter-state goods and livestock.
