Five cows were killed and another sustained serious injuries after a cargo truck allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver rammed into a group of cattle at Verna late Friday night.
Verna Police have apprehended the driver and registered a case, while animal welfare groups rushed to rescue the injured animal.
The accident occurred at around 11.30 pm on Friday near Ravi Cafe, opposite AMI Industries in the Verna Industrial Estate. The truck was proceeding towards All Cargo Gati Ltd when it struck six cows on the road. The impact killed five cows on the spot, while one cow was left critically injured.
The injured animal was shifted to Dhyan Foundation for treatment with the assistance of members of the JKSS group, Parshuram Gomantak Gaushala Sadan and the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA).
Raj Prateek of DSPCA South Goa also reached the accident site during the night and is monitoring follow-up action related to the case and the treatment of the injured cow.
According to Verna Police, the accused driver has been identified as Shah Mohamad Ansari of Mumbai. Based on a complaint lodged by ASI Paresh Faldesai of Verna Police Station, police found that the driver was allegedly operating the cargo truck in a rash and negligent manner while under the influence of alcohol, thereby endangering human life and public safety.
Verna Police have registered an offence under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigation is being carried out by ASI Paresh Faldesai under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
