Transport officials on Tuesday allowed trucks to travel along the Goa-Belagavi road via Chorla after issuing them challans for violating the collector’s order and serving them with a warning.Hundreds of vehicles had been stranded along the Goa-Belagavi road via Chorla from Sunday night till Monday night, after transport officials decided to strictly enforce the North Goa collector’s order banning the movement of heavy vehicles along the route.
Furious over the strict action, several angry truck operators and drivers warned that vegetable and milk vehicles arriving from Belagavi will be stopped if authorities do not allow movement of trucks by Monday night.
As the situation was threatening to escalate, police officials issued challans to the truck operators and noted down their registration numbers, before allowing them to proceed on Tuesday morning. The truck operators were warned of further action if they were found travelling again on the same route via Chorla.
The huge queue of trucks on both sides of the border cleared later in the day.
According to sources, district officials in Goa and Belagavi discussed the issue and there was a suggestion to allow heavy vehicles between 11 pm and 6 am.
Truck operators have requested authorities to permit them to ply along the Belagavi-Goa road vis Chorla as movement for heavy vehicles has been banned via Ramnagar due to the incomplete and dilapidated NH4A. They claimed that they would be forced to travel to Goa via Karwar, which would be an additional 100 kms.
