Uproar over illegal work carried out in Municipal New Market shops

MARGAO

A meeting of the Margao Municipal Market committee raised an uproar after members threatened to resign if illegal work is carried out in the shops in the Municipal New Market  without obtaining permission from the civic body.

In fact, after the meeting, market committee Member, Councilor Mahesh Amonkar has warned that the Margao Municipal New market will become a Marwari market if action is not forthcoming from the civic body to stop the ongoing illegal work inside the market.

Amonkar charged that outsiders  are carrying out work on the shops illegally without obtaining the necessary permission as is mandatory under the rules. “If the MMC fails to initiate action, we will have no option that to quit the panel”, he said.

The meeting chaired by MMC Vice-Chairperson Deepali Sawal was attended by the Chief Officer Manuel Baretto and members as they took stock of the situation wherein illegal work is being carried out in the market late night.

At the meeting, members demanded that the new market should be shut down at 10 pm as per the norms in force. In fact, the members of the market panel asked the Chief Officer to hold the security personnel responsible if the market is found open beyond 10 pm.

Given that some of the shop owners load goods in their shops late night, members of the market panel felt that the MMC should strictly adhere to the timings.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Councilor Mahesh Amonkar said both MLA Digambar Kamat and MMC Chairperson Damu Shirodkar were not kept in the loop by the civic officials when the illegal work was being carried out in the New Market shops late night.

“if the MMC does not show  the courage and stop the illegal works, a time will come when the New market will be known as Marwari market”, he said.

He said the Chief Officer has been told by the members to immediately issue a show cause notice to the person who was carrying out  the illegal work in the night.
