PANAJI
With ongoing Smart City projects creating traffic congestion and scarcity of parking, the Traffic Department has appealed to residents and commuters to use the electric buses operated by Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) to ease congestion.
The city roads, particularly the DB Marg have been further snarled by the Lokutsav festival at Kala Academy. Goa Police have increased the strength of traffic police by including personnel from the Indian Reserve Battalion and home guards in a bid to manage the situation.
Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Prabodh Shirvaikar said haphazard parking has compounded the problem.
“There is not enough parking space because of Smart City work, although it (the development work) is needed,” he said adding, “People are parking anywhere, either in no-parking zones or by double-parking and leaving their vehicles. We appeal to everyone, including office-goers, to park in designated parking areas on a first-come, first-serve basis. They should avoid obstructive parking and if possible, make use of KTCL buses under the Smart City mission. Forty-eight electric buses are operating within the city. Let us reduce vehicle use in Panaji.”
