In an incident that sent shockwaves across the locality of Dhangarwadi in Bicholim, a 45-year-old woman reportedly died after she was dragged by a crocodile into the Amthane dam waters on Saturday.
According to locals, Sangeeta Babalo Shingadi, a resident of Savardhat Dhangarwadi had taken her goats for grazing and on her way back had entered the dam waters to wash her hands at Wadaval village.
She was reported to have been attacked by a crocodile that dragged her deep into the waters. Her badly bruised body was later found by the police team and the fire brigade personnel who rushed to the spot after being intimated by the locals.
Bicholim police are further investigating the matter.
Reacting to the tragic incident, Bicholim MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye condoled the death of the woman saying the incident could have easily been avoided if the Water Resources Department had fenced the entire catchment area of the Amthane Dam.
“I have been personally following up with the WRD to demarcate and fence the entire catchment area of the Amthane Dam... such an attack could have easily been avoided”, he said.
He also called upon the forest officials to rehabilitate crocodiles in the area as this is a second incident.
