A mentally challenged woman, who went missing from her home, was assaulted by a mob in Cumbharjua village on Tuesday, in what was later revealed as a case of mistaken identity.
A video of some people assaulting the victim, mistaken as a child lifter, has gone viral on social media, prompting the Goa police to issue the clarification late on Tuesday night. Her hands were tied while she was continuously being beaten by the mob who accused her of being a kidnapper
“One woman was caught at Cumbharjua on October 25, 2022, in the morning hours suspected to be a child lifter,” Superintendent of Police (North Goa) Shobhit Saxena said.
"The woman was immediately brought to Old Goa Police station and her antecedents were verified. She is mentally challenged having treatment card of IPHB (Institute of Psychiatry and Human behaviour). She was missing since October 24, 2022 from her residence at Marcel,” the statement further read.
Her parents were contacted and she was subsequently admitted to IPHB. It was not clear whether the Old Goa police have booked a case against people caught on camera beating the woman.
