In a major step towards resolving water woes in Mormugao constituency, work on a long-pending twin tank project was launched in Sada-Vasco on Saturday.
The project involves the construction of two 800 cubic metre ground-level water reservoirs, with a combined capacity of 1600 cbm.
Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar launched the work in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker, councillor Shraddha Amonkar, PWD officials, and a gathering of residents.
Amonkar said the initiative is aimed at enhancing the water supply from the current 10 million litres per day (MLD) to 12 MLD, thereby ensuring regular and reliable water supply to over 3,500 households in the constituency.
“This is a dream come true for the people, especially those living in Sada, who have long faced severe water issues. As part of this Rs 1.58 crore project, we are building two reservoirs of 800 cbm each, and the work is expected to be completed within one year,” said Amonkar.
Highlighting the challenges faced by residents of Sada, Amonkar said the area’s hilly terrain and location at the tail end of the supply line made regular water access difficult.
“Currently, people in Sada receive only one to two hours of water a day, which causes great hardship,” he said.
“Water here has to be pumped up with a booster to reach the residents. Once these reservoirs are constructed, we’ll be able to store more water and increase supply to 5 to 6 hours daily.”
Amonkar also stressed the importance of increasing supply to meet demand.
“Our constituency needs 12 MLD of water to ensure consistent supply to the 3,552 households. At present, we get only 10 MLD. These reservoirs will bridge that gap and bring long-term relief.”
Acknowledging that the worst months for water scarcity are March, April, and May, Amonkar urged the contractor to fast-track the work.
“Though the official completion timeline is one year, I’ve requested the contractor to try and finish the work in 8 months, so that we can have the tanks ready by March. This will help residents avoid the brunt of the summer water crisis,” he said.
“The contractor has agreed to speed up the work, and I am hopeful we will meet this early deadline.”
Amonkar also outlined the broader vision for resolving water issues across the constituency, stating that the reservoirs were only the first step.
“This project is part of a larger plan. The government has already begun replacing old pipelines, and the work has reached Nagoa. Once this is completed, we will get a direct pipeline to Sada, eliminating the current circuitous supply route via Verna and Cortalim,” he said.
