‘Grand Housie’ called off at Quepem

SANGUEM

Fearing action by Quepem police after they were issued a memorandum by Quepem Deputy Collector and Sub Divisional Magistrate Manohar Karekar, organisers called off a ‘Grand Housie’ at the Quepem garden which was scheduled on Saturday evening.

Karekar had issued a memorandum to Quepem Police, after a ‘Grand Housie’ with prizes worth Rs 8 lakh was conducted during a cultural event at the Government Sports Complex in Borimol-Quepem on March 31. The memorandum stated that ‘Grand Housie’ games come under the Gambling Act and needs requisite permissions from the authorities.

With the memorandum issued to Quepem police and fearing police action, organisers called off the event at the Quepem garden on Saturday evening, informed sources.

All eyes are now on the ‘Grand Housie’ game scheduled at the Borimol Sports Complex Quepem on April 8 with cash prizes amounting to Rs 15 lakh.

A source in the office of the Quepem Deputy Collector informed that efforts are being made to stop all ‘Grand Housie’ games in Quepem taluka.

These ‘Grand Housie’ games have become a commercial affair offering several lakhs of rupees as cash prizes and attracting youngsters, including minors, to engage in these vices.

On March 23, South Goa SP Tikam Singh said he had issued strict instructions to all the police stations in South Goa to stop the Grand Housie events in the South Goa jurisdiction.
