Atam amchem kitem zatelem?: A drama on the cost of leaving home

Honest Tiatr Review

Concept

Migrating to another country giving up your citizenship is a modern day trend that we need to face. Everything in the family was on a song. The father gets his two sons married and the sons along with their wives opt for the Portuguese passport and decide to leave their country leaving their father. Things take a dramatic turn and they return back home to find that their uncle has sold their house to a Delhi builder and then they realise their folly.

Script

The tiatr has a good concept but the sequences of the plot unfold too dramatically without any thought of practicality. The script lacks depth and hence appears superficial and illogical. There are too many loose ends which demand an answer but alas the writer keeps the audience in suspense for answers even after the tiatr ends! The closing dialogue is unnecessarily lengthened where the writer strays from the lead plot just wandering into territories that have no resemblance to the storyline.

Acting

The tiatr has a good combination of experienced and relatively new artistes. Maria as the elder daughter in law is superb. Justino once again gives a great performance with his powerful dialogue delivery and facial expressions in the character of the father. All artistes contribute their share in forming a formidable team on stage.

Music

The tiatr band music is impressive and pleasing to the ears. There are good solos by Superstar Rons and Jose Mascarenhas. The pick of the day is the solo by the saxophonist of the tiatr, Rufi Mascarenhas. Rufi surely has a long innings to play in the field of tiatr music and singing. The choral trio of the girls had a good subject matter but was weak in harmony. Most of the songs are sung by Maria Cardozo besides her lead as the elder daughter-in-law in the plot. She shines in both.

Comedy

The comedy of the tiatr is clean and decent. The comedy has very less interaction with the main plot. The comedians prove that a tiatr can be well presented without resorting to vulgarity and body shaming. Watch the first wedding comedy; it is well conceived and executed.

Backstage

The Writer’s vision was brought up on stage with a decent ease. The light effects were impressive. The background musical score was decent and satiating. The stage sets were good.

Direction

All artistes did a good job and the Director needs to be commended for presenting a good performance with relatively new names of artistes in the list of tiatrist. However antics like the climax scene that too in the church should be avoided. There was good coordination of the backstage team with the artistes.

Reviewers take

Tiatr has a form of its own and non adherence to the format of tiatr reduces the presentation on stage as a mere concert. When a tiatr is called a ‘tiatr’ variety songs that has traditionally adorned the format is a must. The new directors should learn this format before presenting a performance as a tiatr. Just presenting a Konkani show does not make it a tiatr.

A question to ponder. Why do people shy away from attending tiatrs staged by new writer/directors, with a young talented acting cast? How will new artistes be cultivated in the art if people do not support them? People should learn to patronise the art and not the artistes published on the poster.
