PANAJI: The foundation stone for the proposed Ambedkar Bhavan at Porvorim was virtually laid by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today during the 135th birth anniversary celebrations of Dr B R Ambedkar held at Dr Ambedkar Park, Panaji.
The project, estimated at around Rs 6 crore, is being taken up by the Social Welfare Department in collaboration with the Goa State SC and OBC Finance and Development Corporation.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said the long-pending demand of the SC community has now been fulfilled.
“We laid its foundation stone today. Within a period of one year, the Ambedkar Bhavan will be completed and dedicated to the people next Ambedkar Jayanti,” he said.
He added that the facility will serve multiple social welfare purposes. “Facilities such as hostels, training centres, and a library will be available in the Ambedkar Bhavan,” he noted.
Sawant said the government remains committed to education-led empowerment, in line with Babasaheb’s vision, adding that welfare schemes are being expanded to reach all sections of society.
As part of the programme, meritorious students were felicitated, with the Chief Minister encouraging them to aim for national-level competitive exams such as NEET and JEE, and to make full use of scholarship opportunities.
