Maharashtra to install digital info boards on highways

Maharashtra would soon have e-display boards on highways! Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Chaggan Bhujbal, who also holds the Tourism portfolio, instructed State officials to put up electronic digital display boards across all 178 toll booths in Maharashtra before September 15.

Bhujbal instructed the PWD officials afterchairing a review meeting last week regarding the status of toll booths workingacross the State.

“I have instructed all senior officials toensure that all toll booths across the State are fitted with the new electronicdigital display boards wherein complete information about the toll ishighlighted. Information like “ Names of officials involved in the roadconstructed along with name of contractor, timeline of toll collection, amountto be collected, total toll amount received, etc will be mentioned,” Bhujbalsaid.

The digital display boards will be 4x8 feetin size. “Such boards are already been put up across 5 toll booths for thepilot runs. And as per the instructions of the minister, boards will be putbefore September 15 across all toll booths,” PWD official said.

E-Tags proposal considered In order to reduce the traffic snarlsaround toll booths, PWD is considering to introduce the concept of 'E-Tags'. 

According to a senior PWD official, the`E-Tags' will see users passing tolls cashless. “The concept works like a debitcard. As we swipe it, vehicles will have these tags which will be scannedelectronically across toll booths automatically and amount will be deductedaccordingly,” a PWD official said.
