I hate summers. No, not because of the heat or the perennial rush of pests relatives. I hate it because the week-days and the week-ends are the same. There is little joy in asking someone ‘Whatsapp What’s up this Sunday?’ when Sunday is equal to Thursday. And with little joy, the fellow answers ‘same ol’, same ol’. So, you see, that’s there. We need to enjoy each day to its fullest. And hence, the weekdays should be distinctly different from the weekends.
A week day has to be a weak day. Start with alarm buzz, snooze the alarm, stumble out of bed and rush and rush and rush till one hits the sack at night. The next day, should be rinse-repeat-rinse. One has to feel rushed, one has to fill a rush. That is a week-day. Each one, ditto like yesterday. There should be no time for serendipity, or for change of plans. We have to be in the race, on the dot, every moment. There are no idle week-days.
On the other hand, there are ideal week-ends, though. No rush, no push. Just savour, relax , enjoy, soak in the moment. Cook some, look lissome. Read a much-desired book. Take a walk, listen to good music. Hang out with friends and sometimes with above mentioned relatives. Enjoy a game and crib about oncoming week.
And hence, when the summers come along with their complete takeover of the days, the week-days and the week-ends become one. So, does one savour a book or does one rush out of bed? Should I scream at the children for eating too much ice-cream or should I join them? No, that’s a totally, wrong example : There is no such thing as too much ice-cream any time of the year.
Let me give you a better example, to drive home my point. Do we do binge TV watching or should I monitor screen-time? If it was a weekday, which means a school day, life’s rules are sorted. ‘You can see this program only’, I would have said, robot-like. But this is summer, so my rules fly out of the window. ‘Let’s all watch TV and every new movie’ because ‘when school starts, we are going to limit ourselves’. And it does not matter whether it is Saturday or middle of the week Wednesday.
My mind is getting a little confused. What are the rules for a summer day? Are they the same as a regular week-end? If they are the same, then one does not set an alarm? If we never set an alarm, in all likelihood, my house will still be asleep, because it is summer and we are on holiday. So, we need to set an alarm and if I set an alarm, does the summer day turn Frankenstein-like into a regular school day? Where are the rules to see which rule is to be applied where? See, questions like these perplex me.
Who in the world gets bamboozled by such matters? Who gets frazzled by a loss of rules? Me. Hence, I must be a Mother. A mother waiting for school to start, but not wanting summer to end.
Sensitivity by the jar
How glad am I?
Now that they are selling sensitivity by the jar.
And the customers are flocking from near and far
I need to stock up too
To sprinkle over a conversation or two
Much prefer the bottled variety
The home-made type will just not do.
So I stand in line
And know I will be just fine.
When I have my doseful of sensitivity by the jar.
It's available for one and all
Some days (like these) , it's a complete free-fall.
And at the regular sale
I am so glad that I got a deal.
Especially recommended for those who have not had a cry in years
Or haven't felt the pain of hot tears.
Now there, I have used my stock for the day
So, sore or grumpy, if I am the rest of today
Blame it not on me
This sensitivity by the jar costs a pretty penny -
Alas! its not available for free.
I will be fine tomorrow
As I shop for some super-enriched sensitivity
Which I will sprinkle over your sorrow.
