Communal ideals

The BBSM which is ridden with communal elements should stop issuing empty threats about punishing the BJP government in the forthcoming elections to fool the people of Goa. Which other political option does the BBSM have other than the BJP to push their divisive ideology? The pernicious pseudo-Goans are attempting to portray a larger than life image about themselves and can only be expected to fall in line to the diktats of their sangarchalak during elections by supporting the BJP. The people of Goa are not so dumb as not to understand how these mergerists are re-inventing themselves as lovers of Konknni to actually further Maharashtrian interests.

Spoiled eggs

The wedding is over; the high flying guests have long returned to their base. Perhaps even the couple is divorced by now “ I hope and pray not. All that remains of the plush Delhi wedding is a grounded pontoon (which was acquired to set up the wedding mandap) deeply entrenched in the silver sands of the Arossim beach. I`m told, crazy ideas come to people when there is a mismatch between good fortune and good sense. But if this money bags can just blow up crores of rupees on such sinful extravaganzas, why does the local panchayat body collect only Rs 10,000 as fees? Surely, they would/should not mind paying a few lakhs with the village hosting them. When I suggested this to a village panch whom I met at this mini attraction or distraction, he said that we should not kill the goose that lays golden eggs. Golden eggs for whom?? Does ten thousand rupees amount to golden eggs?

Life the ban

As reported Margao new market vendors have placed some demands before the sitting MLA of Margao constituency. Most of the demands are genuine, except one, that is permanent ban on exhibition cum sale at SGPD ground. The new market vendors, the business community and the local MLAs of Margao have done very little to decongest the town. There is no proper parking space for vehicles. The roads are narrow and then there is parking of two-wheelers on these roads by the market vendors as well. In the new market the passages have become narrower day by day and so, it is inconvenient to walk through these passages even for two persons at a time with a bag in their hand. In such a situation, shoppers find it difficult to go to shopping centres located in a congested new market. On the contrary the exhibition cum sale at SGPDA ground are well organised. There is lot of space for parking. Shoppers can get all types of consumer goods at one place. It is like a one-stop solution to shoppers’ needs. There is a variety and choice as well. There are different types of eateries for shoppers and even amusement games for children. Why the ban on such exhibitions cum sale at SGPDA ground? The Margao MLA must listen not only to business community and the new market vendors but also listen to the grievances of the shoppers as well.

South Africans sweet on sugary drinks despite fat tax

South Africa plans a new "fat tax" on sugary drinks to combat an obesity epidemic -- but sweet-toothed consumers say its chances are slim of making them cut down. Ranked as one of the most obese nations on the continent, South Africa is joining a growing list of countries around the world, such as Britain and Mexico, trying to put a cap on fizzy drinks. But even health experts, who welcome the proposed levy, don't believe the tax will single-handedly discourage South Africans…
