Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas has reportedly submitted a private member's bill seeking an amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act on the lines of Tamil Nadu so that dhirio are allowed as a form of sport.
He claims that he has done so because he wants to somehow preserve this heritage old cultural and traditional sport of Goa.
Dhirio is not a traditional sport of Goa anymore, it's all about betting/gambling and the poor bull suffers. Of course, Venzy claims that if dhirio are re-started then corruption in this sport will surely end and the State will also be able to generate around Rs 500 crore.
If Venzy is so hell-bent on generating revenue for the State then why is he not organizing a big state level boxing tournament and making all our elected MLAs to fight against each other?
I'm sure such a tournament will definitely become an instant hit amongst the masses as Goans.
I personally feel that any inhumane behaviour is not tradition. Sati and child marriages were once also traditions in some parts of our country but have been banned now throughout India.
Hope better sense prevails
