Life has been disrupted in Pernem taluka, with roads submerged and both rivers at Tiracol and Chapora overflowing and water entering the fields.
Since water flows from the Mopa plateau from one side and Tillari project also releases water from the other side, both rivers are flooded and houses along the river banks have been flooded.
Roads were flooded in several parts of Pernem taluka, while the NH66 highway was also submerged at many places, disrupting traffic along the highway.
The Disaster Management Services in Pernem has been monitoring the situation and Pernem Deputy Collector Rohan Kaskar along with Mamletdar Anant Malik have issued orders to all secretaries of panchayats to remain on high alert and to assist the public in case of emergencies.
Meanwhile, the Kasarvarne-Bailpar river has also risen sharply due to incessant rains.
While the river overflows every year and houses in the area get submerged, a newly constructed pump house also got flooded.
“The government should immediately look into this matter and save life and property,” appealed a local farmer Uday Mahale.
“The locals never demanded any pump house on the river banks, but the government went ahead and built it without taking locals into consideration.”
“The locals had demanded a bigger bandhara by replacing the smaller one already existing on the riverbank, but this request was sidelined and instead, a pump house was built at the site,” he added.
