In a significant move it is learnt the Delhi High Court on Tuesday mandated all restaurants in the national capital to provide details of the ingredients used in their food items so as to enable every citizen to know what he/she is eating under the Right to Information Act (RTI). The court maintained that it should also be fairly disclosed as to what is the plant source or animal source or if manufactured in a laboratory as the case may be, of all ingredients irrespective of the percentage in the food item. It is a step in the right direction as those who eat in the restaurants need to know what they are consuming especially if one is a strict vegetarian. It also seems necessary for the restaurant to mention the kind of oil that is being used in the cooking. All this information could be included in the menu presented to the customer seated at the table. The customer will then be in a better position to select the dish of his/her choice keeping in mind one’s health as well as doctor’s recommendation on proper diet and other criteria.
