Extremely heavy rains have left several areas of Panaji inundated, especially the low lying ones and the commercial zone. Adding to the misery is the ongoing Smart City works which lead to road cave-ins and trenches being filled with rain runoff. Storm water drains and sewers from the Portuguese era remain clogged resulting in backflow of sewage and flooding of shops on the 18th June road ; a city councillor glibly proffered that 18th June road was not part of the Smart City mission. Water logging also occured in Mala, Ribandar , and the old Mandovi bridge . Besides, many vehicles broke down on the roads turned rivers adding to the chaos. Panaji has been hell in the monsoons year after year even before the advent of the purported Smart City endeavour. Not one of the CCP members or the mayor have uttered a word on this state of affairs or are spearheading efforts to alleviate the situation, accountability is zilch. All the Panaji denizens have been dealing with are flooding, cave-ins, dust, backflow, accidents and mud with nary a solution in sight.
