The Porvorim to Baga bypass was a recommended route by the late former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. The proposed road, passing through Sangolda, Saligao and the Calangute hills, aims to ease heavy traffic in these busy areas. It will also provide a faster and more direct route to Baga and Calangute, especially during the peak tourist season, while benefiting local commuters throughout the year.
The bypass would stretch from Sangolda towards Baga and Calangute, cutting across hill and field areas. While the project promises better connectivity, it is important that farmers and landowners are fairly compensated, as Parrikar had suggested nearly 20 years ago. The government should take forward this plan and design the bypass along the Sangolda, Saligao and Calangute hill stretches, leading directly to the beaches.
Once completed, this route will link Sangolda, Saligao, Calangute and Baga, providing easy access to Goa’s main coastal belt. Such a project could become a world-class road in coastal Goa if planned well and executed on time. Parrikar had mentioned this proposal during a public meeting in Saligao, highlighting his vision for Goa’s future infrastructure.
Additionally, a flyover similar to the Baina“Vasco one is urgently needed along the coastal stretch from Sinquerim and Candolim to Anjuna and Vagator via Baga and Calangute. This would help manage growing traffic for decades to come, even before new commercial constructions begin. It is time the Goa Planning Commission takes up these long-term infrastructure plans.
