Today is ‘National Handloom Day’. In 2015, the Government of India decided to designate August 7 every year, as the National Handloom Day.
This date is significant because the ‘Swadeshi Movement’ was launched in the country, which contributed to the struggle of India for its independence.
The handloom sector is a symbol of our country’s rich and varied cultural heritage, and is an important source of livelihood in rural and semi-rural parts of our country.
On this day, the handloom-weaving community is honored and the contribution of this sector in the socio-economic development of our country is highlighted.
The best contribution to National Handloom Day can be purchasing more handloom products and encouraging more people to do it.
In Goa the handloom craft has seen a revival under ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. It is learnt that currently, there are 157 weavers in Goa that operate as handloom craftsmen in Goa. The state of Goa is famous for Kunbi textile, a type of dyed sari.
We need to resolve to protect our handloom heritage and to empower the handloom weavers and workers financially and instill pride in their exquisite craftsmanship.
