One would expect history and facts not to be distorted by well versed historians. Inqusition cannot be attributed to St Francis to disrobe him of his title of reverence and admiration. The argument that his suggestion favouring Inqusition was enforced 15 years later by one of St Francis' personal confessors is a figment of imagination. Inqusition was against those converted but still secretely carrying on with their practices and faith. BJP's clear agenda promoting Hindutva obliquely is visible in BJP-ruled states The stament by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and provision of Rs 20 crores for reconstruction of temples in a secular nation is unjustified. The state has no religion and cannot divert general resources for promoting a particular religion. Sawant specifically mentions Hindu temples but the fact is many mosques too were destroyed. Sawant is definitely emboldened after his unexpected victory. He should have studied the issue in depth instead of superficially raising passions. Nobody then and even today approves the merits of Inqusition, just as today people resent onslaught on Muslims in a variety of ways. If the Govt wants to restore temples, it must also restore churches, mosques and forts that are culturally relevant.
