SC, HC should respect environmentalists

If the Supreme Court and the High Court of Bombay in Goa do not step in to arbitrate the environmental apprehensions of Goans, then the Courts will have to be blamed for any loss of life, as MOEFCC has abdicated its responsibility on protecting the environment.

Since the ruling in the Mopa case, 55,000 trees are being felled. Environment Impact Assessment has not been conducted or is not being heeded to by the government.

The double tracking and the unscientific destruction of Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary and the National Park at Mollem are stark reminders that the people of Goa are opposing in overwhelming multitudes.

The handling of coal and its transportation by MPT in blatant violation of environment concerns are matters that the Courts have to address.

The people of Goa have to determine their own fate and the Courts have to step in to protect the environment. The counsel of the environmentalists has to be respected.

More recently, the concerns of the villagers of Melauli have to be protected and the IIT project should be shifted to Farmagudi or another venue which is a more acceptable.
