The Supreme Court on Monday, in a landmark verdict dismissed the pleas challenging the 1976 amendment to the Constitution adding terms "socialist", "secular" and "integrity" to the Preamble, observing Parliament's amending power extended to Preamble too. Rejecting the pleas on grounds, including the delay of over 44 years, the top court said terms like 'socialist' and 'secular' were 'integral' to the Preamble making the "prayers particularly questionable". Well, the Supreme Court's observation must have come like a tight slap on those fighting to take away the fundamental basic rights of all the minorities, dreaming of forcibly imposing the religious beliefs, customs of just one single religion over others under the guise of pseudo-nationalism. Anyway, I hope that the individuals who had filed their PILs in the apex court will henceforth come to their senses and finally accept the top court's latest verdict over the above mentioned terms, especially secularism as the same in particular is indeed a basic and inalienable part of the Indian Constitution, which no one can challenge nor change it even in the near future.
