In the past Goa has produced world-class young chess players. Goa’s newest chess prodigy Ethan Vaz has made the state and the country proud by winning a silver medal at the Super Final of World Chess Championship which is reportedly the final stage of the FIDE Online Cadets and Youth Rapid World Championship series. It is learnt that over 3,000 participants from 160 national federations took part in the World Championship series. Young Ethan Vaz in the process defeated the top seed who was rated a mammoth 892 points above him. Ethan played top-notch chess all along and defeated several players who were rated much higher than him. He was the gold and silver medalist at Western Asia Chess Championship in 2019 and the Under-9 Goa State Champion at the age of 7. He has won at several major championships in his career including a double Gold Medal and was crowned champion at the Western Asia Online Chess Championship 2021 (Under-10) Open Category organised by Chess Federation of Sri Lanka under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and International Chess Federation (FIDE). The chess prodigy who has a bright future will go a long way and make a mark for himself in world chess. The budding talent needs to get all the encouragement that comes his way.
