Uniform Civil Code, a trial balloon

The new laws enacted by the Uttarakhand government under the guise of Uniform Civil Code make it obligatory for live-in partners to register their relationship within one month of entering into it, failing which the couples can be imprisoned. What this essentially  means is that the government can now march into our bedrooms and lock us up for living together without it’s  sanction.

The Uttarakhand civil code shows us how the slide towards Talibanisation continues. Our personal lives are not our own any longer; they belong to the government. This strikes at the very heart of the fundamental right to privacy, life and liberty. India has become a surveillance state where citizens with fundamental rights are reduced to abject subjects at the mercy of functionaries armed with despotic powers. The UCC is just another trial balloon launched to test the waters for establishment of a 100% authoritarian state, expect other saffron states to go the way of Uttarakhand soon. This is the New India all right thinking individuals would never want to be a part of, but hey !! we don’t have a choice.
