It’s encouraging to see Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) e-buses operating in Panaji and its suburbs. Citizens should prefer these e-buses over overcrowded and poorly maintained private buses. However, KTCL must address some initial challenges. Currently, only a few e-buses are running, but all 48 are expected to be operational by August 31. The delay is due to a shortage of charging stations, which are now being completed. Additionally, private bus owners have opposed KTCL’s operation of e-buses in Panaji. A potential solution could be leasing e-buses to owners with buses older than 15 years or deemed unfit for service.
Moreover, 161 bus stops have been designated along routes such as Panaji-Bambolim, Panaji-Taleigao, and Panaji-Altinho. Bus shelters are being redesigned yet again, with the new design aimed at preventing people from sleeping there. Unfortunately, the current shelters vary in size and lack seating, except for one at Miramar, which is often obstructed by parked vehicles, forcing city buses to stop elsewhere and causing traffic issues.
A smart transit card system is also planned, allowing passengers to ‘tap and go,’ eliminating the need for conductors but potentially leading to job losses. While convenient for regular travellers, it raises questions about how occasional passengers, both locals and tourists, will pay. Lastly, since the e-buses are air-conditioned, drivers should keep the doors closed while the bus is in motion to maintain efficiency.
