The Maharashtra agency engaged in the repair of the Margao flyover under the aegis of the PWD has been indulging in unsafe labour practices. The poor workers toil under the hot sun without any kind of safety gear, safety shoes or gloves; the vibrations from the pneumatic drill for dismantling the top surface of the road lead to hand injuries and the pieces of broken concrete flying about endangers their feet. No goggles are provided to the labourers to protect their eyes either. The government should penalise the contracted agency for not following safe construction practise at the site and enforce the same. This is also in total contravention of the Occupational safety, Health and Working conditions Act 2020, such flouting of statutory legislation should be firmly dealt with.
Abandoned vehicles in Benaulim and Colva
At many places in Benaulim and Colva, we see abandoned rusty scooters and cars defiling the landscape. These are not only an eyesore occupying pavements and green areas but also a security threat. Terrorists or mischief mongers could place bombs or IEDs in them and activate them remotely causing carnage and destruction. I request the authorities to tow away such vehicles to pounds or at the very least fine owners for their conduct and ask them to remove their junk.
