Last week, I visited Kshetra Mahuli, the confluence of the Krishna and Venna rivers in Satara district, to attend a friend’s funeral. An ancient Shiva temple stands on the riverbank, where last rites are performed. I was shocked to see the area strewn with foul-smelling waste discarded by visitors; even the rivers resembled drains. We desecrate even places of worship and show little respect for our heritage. This reflects very poorly on us as Indians, especially those whose sentiments are hurt at the drop of a hat. When will we finally learn some civic sense?
