Two tourists from Tamil Nadu were arrested by Calangute police on Friday for allegedly clicking photographs of foreign women tourists on Baga beach without their consent and harassing them.
The arrests come amid a crackdown by the tourist security police following a spate of complaints from foreign women about harassment on the State’s beaches. In recent days, several domestic tourists have been detained, with most cases involving male tourists allegedly taking photographs and videos of foreign women in swimwear and passing suggestive or lewd remarks, thereby outraging their modesty.
Unfortunately, many male domestic tourists “ often those who leave their families behind and visit Goa in groups “ seem to believe they can openly consume alcohol and misbehave with anyone, especially foreign women tourists found on the beaches once they arrive in Goa. This stems from a misplaced mindset that “Goa mein kuch bhi chalta hai”.
I hope the tourist security police continue this crackdown and take strict action against such offenders so that Goa’s beaches remain safe and welcoming for all women tourists visiting the State in the future.
