Recently, I visited the hilltop Sajjangadh Fort in Satara district, which is considered a holy place by Maharashtrians, as the enclosure contains several small temples and the samadhi of Samarth Ramdas Swami, the spiritual guru of Chhatrapati Shivaji. I was appalled to see garbage lining the slopes at the start of the climb. We Indians display little civic sense, yet we have anointed ourselves as Vishwaguru. What will we teach the world if we ourselves fail to keep our surroundings clean? Shame!
